“from love to matrimony in a moment”

by EKTA RATHORE

“A lady’s imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment,” Jane Austen once wrote, in her much adored book, Pride and Prejudice. In this column, Ekta tries to engage with Austen’s works, their adaptations, and, sometimes, Austen herself. She untangles the sexual politics among the characters and their subtle rebellions. By exploring the central theme of Austen’s books – matrimony – Ekta investigates the gender and class relations of Austen’s world. More than anything, this column is Ekta’s love letter to Austen and the remarkable women she conjured.

“A lady’s imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment,” is a quote by Jane Austen from her book Pride and Prejudice. Through her column, Vaishnavi tries to tread the lands that once Austen’s characters walked upon, the thoughts they developed, the people they encountered, the plots and turns of their lives, and the central theme of almost all of her novels: marriage. It’s a softly captured glimpse of what happens in Austen’s world, and between the pages of her works.
